Tax Notice First Document Review

Use this checklist as a general preparation aid. The documents and procedures required for a particular matter may differ.

1. Read the complete notice, annexures and DIN or reference number.
2. Record the issuing authority, section, assessment year or tax period.
3. Confirm the date of service and response deadline.
4. Download the filed return, computation, tax credit statements and acknowledgements.
5. Identify the exact transaction, deduction, income item or mismatch referred to.
6. Reconcile books, bank records, invoices, certificates and portal data.
7. Prepare a chronology of relevant events and earlier communications.
8. Do not submit an explanation before checking that supporting documents are consistent.
9. Retain proof of submission and a complete copy of the response.
